Research Cost Mitigation Fund

Memo Date: August 11, 2023

Revised Approach to Cost Mitigation for GSR and Postdoc Cost Increases

In response to feedback requesting a simpler process to access campus mitigation funding, I write to revise the process defined in the memo dated May 3, 2023. These funds are intended to help offset the immediate impact of graduate student researcher and post-doctoral scholar rate increases effective in April 2023 and October 2023 per bargaining agreements ratified in December 2022. Instead of maintaining funds centrally and requiring an application for every award, $2 million of budgeted funds will instead be distributed directly to schools and divisions. It will be at Dean/Vice Chancellor discretion to determine how best to deploy to meet critical needs. The distribution is based on the proportion of actual salaries paid to graduate student researchers and postdocs in fiscal year 2022-23.

An additional $1 million will continue to be held centrally. These funds are available to address emergency or special requests. To submit a request for consideration, send a memo explaining circumstances and include in your submission an overview of how the school/division allocation was deployed. We will further assess the program in early 2024 to determine how best to continue supporting faculty.

Sincerely,
Hal Stern
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
